Out of the Decay for: Distinction Magazine

If walls could talk I am certain much of our personal and national history could be revealed and the need for history books might cease to exist. Well, maybe thats too much of a stretch but you get the picture.

Out of Decay: a Norfolk Art Scene Rises, looks at the history of the brick and mortar at the once thriving Daylight Bakery built in 1923. In its heyday the little Norfolk plant was producing bread for dozens of neighborhood markets throughout Hampton Roads. However, by 1963, with suburban sprawl, growing pains and a union dispute, the little bakery closed their doors.

It wasn't until 2002 that antique dealer Lana Wolcott saw potential in the building, giving birth to Fawn Street Studios. Rather than go into too much detail I suggest you read Mike Hixenbaugh's story that traces the past and present of this building's lifespan. His words take you through the building's metamorphosis from the bread to the cobwebs to a facilitator of the Norfolk art scene with an array of color that I can't begin to match.

In the end you will find that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder, at least in the case of Fawn Street Studios

The Mystery of Glass for: Distinction Magazine

Process can be a beautiful thing.

At the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio the art of glass blowing becomes an act of rhythm and harmony.  The synchronization of ones breathe and movement is as much an art form as the elegant sculptures crafted from the glowing globs of glass molten.

Working in unison, two artists transform a chalk sketching on the concrete slab floor into a three dimensional dissertation of glass. This shapeshifting of molten takes on a sense of Zen and watching the dance assures me of this notion.

“It is both liquid and solid, elastic and brittle, captivating and extremely humbling,”  says  studio manager Charlotte Potter.

Online Print Gallery

I am humbled and honored to have a collection of my images added to the newly launched online gallery 52 Selects. The website offers signed prints from exceptionally talented and award winning documentary photographers located worldwide.

Visit 52 Selects and you will find signed prints available for purchase from Chicago Tribune photographer Scott Strazzante.  I have always been a fan of Scott's work. His diptych series, from which prints are available at 52selects, offer an ingenious coupling of juxtaposed images. If you're not familiar with his work, you need to be.

At 52 Selects you will also find a pictorial piece of eye candy in the work of Sports Illustrated's staff photographer Bill Frakes.

If you have not already made your way to the online gallery definitely have a look at some of the haunting images of Pakistan based photographer Marta Ramoneda.

Last but not least, a special thanks to the curator of 52 Selects Ken Hawkins for inviting me to become a contributor of the company he keeps.
